What is EFT Couples Counselling?
The counselling approach used by Wendy is called emotionally focused therapy (EFT), a short term (8 to 20 sessions) structured approach formulated in the 1980’s by Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg. This approach is also used with families and individuals. The EFT approach helps couples to understand, modulate and express their feeling in a healthy and mature manner. The approach also helps the couple improve the way they interact with each other. A relatively substantial body of research now exists on the effectiveness of EFT.
EFT offers a change process that is mapped into three stages and nine steps.
EFT is based on the theory of adult love – attachment theory. This theory allows couples to understand the deeper underlying causes of their distress, the goals of therapy and the key moves and moments that define love relationships. EFT is able to address the strength of the bond between partners. EFT views relationship distress as maintained by absorbing states of negative emotion. This emotion both reflects and primes rigid and constricted patterns of interaction,
such as demand/withdraw.
These patterns make the safe emotional engagement necessary for secure bonding impossible.

What is couples Counselling
Couples counselling seeks to help couples work through difficult relationship issues and draw the partners closer together. Couples normally seek this style of counselling when they are experiencing stress in their relationship such as: communication problems, increase in conflict, financial stress, parenting disagreements, sexual difficulties, jealousy, emotional distance from each other or one is having an affair.
What are the goals of EFT Couples Counselling?
• To expand and re-organize key emotional responses.
• To create a positive change in the way partners interact with each other.
• To create a secure bond between partners.
How can couples counselling help my relationship ?
If your relationship is important to you and you are struggling to get along, then yes couples therapy is worth investing in. Relationships are not always easy to navigate and they require both partners to work on it. Sometimes couples do not have the communication skills to express their feelings and concerns to their partners. Nor are they always aware of underlying issues such as stress, unhealthy role models or past trauma experiences that may be impacting on how they relate to their partner. Emotionally focused couples therapy assists couples to; express their emotions in a healthy manner, identify and change unhelpful interactional patterns and bring the partners closer together.
What can I do instead of couples therapy?
Some couples can talk through and resolve their issues without the help of a third party. However, if you are at the point where every time you try to talk about your concerns you end up in an argument or one partner withdraws and shuts down, then it may be time to seek help from a couple’s counsellor. A trained couple’s therapist can help you both express your concerns in a way that is calm and reasonable allowing a better pathway to resolving the issue.
How much does couples therapy cost?
Couples therapy is not as expensive as you think. Most couples usually require between 6 -12 sessions, so you are looking at a cost of between $1,200 – $2,400 to improve your relationship. This cost is considerably less than the financial cost of separating. Also consider the emotional toll of separating that you will avoid by sorting out your relationship issues.
Can couples therapy make things worse?
Couples therapy with a qualified and experienced therapist is generally helpful for couples seeking therapy. Unfortunately there are counsellors out there who are not qualified in couples therapy. An untrained therapist may not have the skills to help you and your partner navigate and resolve the issues you are dealing with. Emotionally Focused Couples therapy is a highly researched model of therapy with demonstrated positive outcomes for couples.
Does couples therapy work after an affair/cheating?
Couples therapy can certainly help couples repair their relationship following an affair. Therapy with an emotionally trained therapist supports each partner to express painful emotions, process what happened, and address the underlying issues that have contributed to the affair occurring.
Do couples’ therapists ever suggest separation?
A couple’s therapist will not recommend that a couple separate. The decision to separate lies solely with the couple. The therapist will assist couples to understand their relationship issues and help them identify if their needs are not being met sufficiently. This may lead to greater clarity regarding their ongoing investment in the relationship. This greater clarity may result in the couple deciding to separate.
